Big Work!

Well today turned out to be a pretty big work day. I should have guessed it would be when Bunny told me this morning "Mom, I don't like to play anymore. I am getting too old. All I really want to do is bake and do work in our school room." :) I really have no idea where that came from since she played all day yesterday! So she want down to do school before I finished some of the little things I needed to do this morning! I love Montessori! We mostly did our regular works, but Bunny did new one that was pretty big! We moved forward in the Golden Bead Material! Bunny has been working with the beads, but we have only been forming numbers. Today we moved to the Unlimited Bead exercises in Gettman. Basically I gave her a 4 digit number then she brought me the beads. We put these on a mat and then I gave her another number. She got me the bead for that number and put them on the mat with the others. Then we added the numbers. First she counted the units, then the tens, then the hundreds, and finally the thousands. After she counted each place value, I gave her the numbers. Then we put the number together and I showed her that the beads from the two numbers make the bigger one! She LOVED it! We did it about 4 times! Then I had to go help Pup, and she put it away. But I think that I will get some of the addition command cards from Montessori For Everyone so that she can be more independent! She really is moving ahead in math faster then I thought, but she really seems to understand it. Here are the pictures of her working!

More big news here is that I have officially signed up to do Karen Tyler's Montessori Training course! I am really excited to get to work! I think that it will be really good! Has anyone else taken this course? If so how was it? Happy Schooling!

  1. Isn't addition grand? My son loves it too!!! I found free command cards for adding here: http://www.montessoriforlearning.com/AdditionCards.asp

Oh, and I am in Karen's course right now. I've heard in past semesters that there is lots of discussion, but it seems that I've gotten a dud group, with no discussion at all. However, the albums are great, and I'm about to post about the writing component of the language album.

Hope this helps. If you need more info, please feel free to message me.

  2. Yeah for Bunny!! I have taken Karen Tylers' course and loved the albums. If you search on my blog under Karen Tyler you can see some examples of works in her album that the kids enjoyed. Thank you for sharing.

  3. I'm glad to hear such good feedback from the course! Thanks Leann for the offer of talking! I love to talk this stuff out, so I may take you up on that! :)
I love th addition and so does Bunny! I was starting to think that she would never be iterested, but then she was begging to do bead work, so I tried a new presentation! It worked! Oh and thanks Leann for the free cards! I will check those out!

  4. I write the addition questions in a notebook for Bear the night before. I do four questions per page. I usually do more than one page and that way she can keep going if she wants, but usually, 4 is a good number for her as it tires her out:) She can write the numbers so she writes the answers in, but you wouldn't need to do that necessarily. I like it in the notebook because I can look back later and see what we've done.

  5. @ Montessori Tidbits, my Karen Tyler group didn't do much discussing either after the first month.

  7. We're doing the formation of complex numbers here too! I personally love the golden bead materials and D loves it too. I love the showing off pictures with daddy! D gets so excited to show daddy her work, when she is a bit disinterested in any work, the moment I mention how she can demonstrate doing a particular work to daddy, her interest peak and that keeps her motivated a lot!

  8. I'll have to try that! I know that Daddy always thinks it cool to see what we have been up to, and Bunny loves to tell people how things are done! :) Thanks for the idea!
